DEAN'S MESSAGE

Welcome to the School of Arts and Humanities website. We’re delighted you’re thinking of studying at UAB and want to learn more about our programs and majors.

The School of Arts and Humanities is comprised of the Departments of Art and Art History, Communication Studies, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Music, Philosophy, Theatre, and the African American Studies program. The School is recognized for its diverse programs and outstanding faculty who are dedicated to providing you the best educational experiences while at UAB. Not only do our faculty excel in teaching, they remain actively engaged in scholarly and creative research. This means that your professors are informed about the most current issues in their disciplines which, we believe, translates into a more comprehensive and dynamic learning environment for our students.

The faculty of the School of Arts and Humanities consists of 110 full-time and approximately 70 part-time members who, in many instances, teach at several levels of their disciplines. Hence, as a freshman and sophomore you may have senior faculty members as your instructors.  And, many of our courses enroll smaller numbers of students to create a more personalized learning environment.

The School is particularly proud of its programmatic diversity and active engagement with the Birmingham metro community that place us in a unique position to augment your studies at UAB with many intellectual, social and cultural opportunities. The School hosts numerous student and faculty performances, exhibitions of contemporary and historic art, lectures by visiting artists and scholars, discussion groups, and a film series that will enrich your years of study. Add to this the many nationally and internationally recognized artists who perform at the world-class Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, and you’ll have an accurate picture of just how rich and rewarding your studies at UAB will be.

UAB, located in the largest and most dynamic city in Alabama, is able to provide you with an education that goes beyond its campus into the larger Birmingham community. Many of our departments and faculty interface with companies and agencies in the city to provide internships and special learning opportunities that expand your knowledge of a particular field. The School also enjoys professional affiliations with the Birmingham Museum of Art and the Alabama Ballet to enhance your overall educational experience.

I look forward to seeing you at the School of Arts and Humanities and invite you to visit our campus at your convenience. Join us for any of a number of open houses scheduled throughout the year, talk with our students and faculty, or visit a class to experience the excitement of the School of Arts and Humanities. I think you’ll agree that studying at UAB is the right decision for you.
