The Visual Arts Gallery, located on the first floor of the Humanities Building, is committed to critically considering and representing a diverse range of arts practices. The Visual Arts Gallery serves as UAB’s site for artistic innovation and interrogation through exhibitions, both contemporary and historical, which contribute to discourse on contemporary culture.
The Visual Arts Gallery hosts approximately ten to twelve exhibitions annually. These include a Juried Student Annual, works by faculty and BFA students, and a number of curated exhibitions featuring works by local, national and international artists including exhibitions focusing on experimental practices, installation, film, video, time-based works, performances and digital media.
The Visual Arts Gallery and the Department of Art and Art History have hosted numerous visiting artists including Christo, Sue Coe, Andreas Serrano, Peter Halley and John Waters. The gallery maintains a study collection as part of the UAB permanent collection, and organizes the Triennial Samuel B. Barker Outdoor Sculpture Competition.
